Apparently, having the weight of a nation on your back as you complete one of the most punishing sporting events in the world wasn't enough to keep Ryder Hesjedal from his finish atop the Giro d'Italia podium.
An incredible Grand Tour victory!
It couldn't go to a more deserving person. He's exactly the kind of sporting hero the country needs. He's a hard working, humble, decent, consumate professional who's paid his dues on the way to this victory. He's also a hell of a nice guy with a great sense of humour.
We had the privilege of sponsoring Ryder's participation in Toronto's Gran Prix road race right after he registered a 6th place finish in the Tour a couple of years back. In return, mercanix hosted an invite-only ride with Ryder north of the city for a 60k recovery ride. He was everything you'd hope for; personable, engaging, polite and cheerful. All of the riders remarked at what a decent individual he was despite his great accomplishments and remarkable physical capabilities.
Stand up and clap Canada. Ryder deserves a long and hearty ovation. And so do the rest of his teammates without whom he wouldn't have conquered.
